Body of Knowledge

Before I went to college, someone told me that to earn a PhD, you had to add to the body of knowledge.

This information amazed me. It meant that to earn a PhD you had to discover something. It also meant that as long as there were PhD candidates, the universe of knowledge would always be expanding.

This made me feel small and insignificant.

Today, I just like the way it sounds. “Body of Knowledge” just has a nice ring to it. It’s something that could be both huge and tiny – depending on how it’s viewed.

Maybe I’m remembering this today because we’re discovering each other. We’re adding to our body of knowledge about each other. To be sure, we’re learning quite a lot these days.

I look forward to our diplomas.
