It’s helpful to have reminders to stay humble.
Today’s Writer’s Almanac reminds us that on this date, Beryl Markham flew solo, westward, over the Atlantic – the first person to do so.
The flight ended in Nova Scotia when she ran out of fuel and landed in a bog.
Ms. Markham walked away from the landing and found a ride to New York City – where she declared her trip complete. I can’t decide what I admire most – Markham’s flight, or the decision to try. It makes me reflect on the times I landed in a bog.
Today we’re contemplating a life changing “trip” of splicing our households and lives together. When it’s all said and done, I’m guessing that the most commendable thing about it will simply be our decision to do so.
As a dose of humility it’s good to know that after landing in a bog it’s still possible to catch a ride onward, and call the trip a success.
